About Ming

Many people in the world are keen on making money, making a good life for themselves or their families. I am just like everyone else, Money makes it possible for us all to gain access to things and conveniences. But in my life, more than money or a good life, I want to make a difference. What you see here is a result of my first real job. I learned about the web, I learned to create it, use it and make a difference with it. There are project notes found on this website. As a professional Consumer Strategist in online media, I help orgranisations optimise and increase audience/consumer touchpoints. More details can be found on What I Do and What I really do.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Information and Communications from the National University of Singapore.  Pursuing my continued interest in technology and engagement strategies, I spent the next 2 years at loyalty marketing start up leaving as Senior Manager, e-Business.  I then moved to Doha to join the loyalty marketing team of Qatar Airways.  Currently, back in Singapore, I am engaged in project management roles in several mobile-web community projects in Education, Lifestyle, and Customer Engagement and Relationship Management. Away from work, I spend a large part of my leisure time on the paintball field.  I am a certified paintball tournament player and a proud member of SPNS team Kamikaze.

My understanding of the consumer market extends from the importance of constant, relevant and influencing bi-lateral engagment through consumer behavioural technologies such as Social media(Facebook, Twitter, Friendster), Internet Marketing, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) on various platforms such as mobile computing (mobile phones, laptops).

What I do

As a day to day, I manage several projects in web, mobile and even desktop application developments as a project/outsourcing manager. I ensure that the development project is done within a right budget with the required functions and designs. Breaking down into more common job names.I do the following

  1. Web Design
  2. Web Development
  3. Mobile Development (iPhone/iPad)
  4. Project Management

As a business owner, why should you outsource this role and not manage the project yourself?

  1. It takes time and energy off your core business and focus. It's very important as a business owner to keep focused on your core business and leave peripheral functions, especially ones that need technical expertise and experience, to others.
  2. Save time and money. It is possible for anyone to acquire the skill and experience over time. But it will just cost you time and money. Simply put. You will make mistakes and it will just take time and money to fix it.
  3. Experience and specialisation. I do this as a core focus. I put my mind and energy to it 24/7. Keep myself up to date on the latest technology, methods and trends.

In 1 word. Focus. Hiring/Outsourcing work to someone like me takes your mind off an area of the business which takes a lot of energy, time, effort and money.

Why ask Ming and not someone else? With years of outsourcing experience and project management. I'm

  1. Cheaper than your interactive agencies
  2. As good as, otherwise better at delivery
  3. Think long term for your business

If there's something I should cover in my articles/writings let me know. I'm still pretty new to Twitter but I'm listening to you guys. Another way to reach me other than spamming the comment box.

Who I am not.

5 years into my professional career many of my friends still wonder what is it that I do. Some people think that I do nothing at work all day ( I aspire but never seems to happen), play with Facebook all day (I do sometimes), all kinds of odd jobs (in a way true...), web design (most misleading), web programming (even more misleading). So I'm going to make a list of professions that I've been associated with but I'm not.

Web Designer

So I am not a designer by any chance. In fact I even need design help on simple things like logo and name cards. So how do I do my websites? Templates. Professional Club templates with very minimal changes. Club templates are often good enough for a website to look professional. Many are misled to think that templates are standard and boring and consumers can tell in 1 glance. Check out demo.rockettheme.com, demo.templateplazza.net, demo.joomlart.com. What I do however, is advice in the area of user experience and performance objectives. As part of my job, I help companies and brands put the right tools and elements on the pages of their website to achieve performance objectives such as sign ups, sales, exposures, click throughs etc.

Web Programmer

I can do a little coding and debugging of troubled scripts but I'm not a web programmer and certainly am not a whiz to whip up a good application or two. I can't make that cool iphone app or facebook widget, not even a newsletter signup. If scripts (commercial or open) are available for these purpose, I pick and implement them. What I do is functional designs and workflows of useful web and CRM applications, I still rely on the programmers to execute my design. I create effective application workflows and designs so that companies can achieve their desired objectives, be it operational efficiencies, sales automation, traffic leverage etc...

Social Media Consultant

A new buzz word for web marketers. It will be very inaccurate to say that I'm a social media expert because I'm mostly familiar with only the use of social media for consumer engagement but not all aspects (For one, I can't generate a huge PR campaign on social media). While I'm familiar with the social media tools, but these are just one of the many tools that I use for creating customer touchpoints and engagement. I use social networking sites like Facebook and Friendster, blogs (and now microblogging like Twitter) and media sharing sites such as Youtube and Flickr, in various combinations to achieve an overall touchpoint strategy so that consumers are engaged from various opt-in day to day activities.

Web Marketer

A recent title I've been associated with. While it's true that most of the work I do involve the web and online media. There is a large portion that involves the use of loyalty cards, discounts and promotions, and other behavioral stimulating activities that are part of the overall consumer engagement programs I design.

In summary, I

  1. Do not design webpages but I help decide which are the critical elements of a website and the overall experience of the user.
  2. Do not code but I design applications that achieve various organisational objectives such as perational efficiencies, sales automation, traffic leverage etc...
  3. Do a lot more than social media and web marketing.
  4. Put together a strategic plan for businesses to use technology to their advantage.
