I'm still trying to grasp the perspective of small business owners and what really mattered to them in terms of technology and why they wouldn't spend a little more money on web prescence while splurging for mainstream media leads. You could really go the distance on the web with that kind of money. Finally I was having a conversation with my sister yesterday and the answer was simple.
They don't care for the technical complexities of SEO, SEM, Leads generation etc. All they want to know is what is their benefit or what problem are you solving. Small business owners have a million problems on their minds, last they need is another problem with a website or a consultant who persistently tells them what to do with their website. And btw... they can NEVER be happy with any state of their website so there's always room for amendments and adjustments. So good luck if you decide to take on development work for them.
That is why so many websites with tools for small businesses have managed to take off. It's a simple DIY tool that solves their problem. If it doesn't solve their problem, often the "premium" verion does. If the "premium" version doesn't then you're probably looking down the wrong alley. I'm going to open a new section on the site in the next few weeks to feature some of these tools like file/document sharing, project management, site builders, accounting, salesforce management, email management. If you have a small business running and would like to see how some of these tools can benefit you. Look out for it.
