As Suited Technology increases it's team size, we have a team structure where most of the team members work independently from home and meet only for team meetings and collaborations. Perhaps the company is still in it's early stage but here's what I found.

Having telecommuting means:

  1. Less time wasted on traveling to and from office on days.
  2. Greater flexibility and choice of work environment. You can work from home, from a cafe/Macdonalds near the office or near home. And of course at the office if you want to.
  3. Better productivity with less distractions of work mates walking up to demand your immediate attention.
  4. Better focus as team members can work on tasks in an objective oriented manner rather than influence of what's going on around.
  5. Cost savings for the company as the company needs to afford less infrastructure.
  6. Better staff retention due to the trusting work culture and benefits explained later
  7. Better selection of team members who have the following traits.

To survive a telecomuting work environment, team members must have the following traits.

  1. Maturity. Team members will be subject to task and time tracking tools that may seem somewhat invasive. However, these tools also allow for team members to log off work whenever they don't want/need to be tracked.
  2. Responsible. Team members are responsible to being on all telecommuting tools during hours, such as Skype. They will have to log progress into team logs and literally ask for work when they have nothing left on their plate. Otherwise they won't be able to log progress the next day.
  3. Independent and Resourceful. Team members will have to communicate directly with other colleagues, vendors or even friends to get their work done. In the abscence of a physical office, they have the flexibility to get things done however they want to. No need for supervisor approvals for every little decision like going for a smoke/toilet break.

They enjoy the benefits of...

  1. A transparent merit based work environment rather than one that is supervised and based on how much time you spend in the office. It's all about getting the work done.
  2. A flexible work life. This is where work life balance really comes in. You can really plan life around work as flexibly as you want. You will no longer need to take leave days to errand errands or take care of your sick child.
  3. A trusting and dynamic work environment where everyone is entrusted to do their work to the best of their ability.
