The good (and scary) thing about Google and the Android

I lost my HTC Dream on Monday on my way back from the Hair Challenge. This itself is a story that involved calling the cab station who verified my trip with the driver, but he denied seeing the phone and he had already picked and dropped off several customers (in the span of maybe 10 mins. Yeah right. But oh well... My luck.). So 1st problem, my gmail, mingspot email, messengers, calendar, contacts and every known online profile is synced to the phone. First thing, cancel my line. The guy who picked up (took) my phone actually turned it off the first 10-15 mins while I was buzzing it non-stop to check if I've actually left it in one of my many bags. Shamelessly, after 30 mins, he turned it on again. Probably realised that it was a 3G phone. So I dialed the Singtel hotline and got the line cancelled. Got online and started to change passwords to all my online profile. That took a while but it'll be necessary. Because there is no way of undoing the sync without the phone.

Then I went off in search of a replacement. Here's where I really thank God for having an Android phone. All my contacts are still here in my google contacts. So when I log into my google account. Everything is still here. Gone are the days of SIM Card backups, written backups of telephone numbers etc. I remembered when my last HTC Touch died suddenly, I almost died with the phone. All my contacts were stored on the phone and all of it was gone with the phone. I just attended the wedding dinner of my JC friend and friends from more than 10 years ago just appeared, all the numbers I collected that day were still there! YEAH!!!

So I found a 2nd hand 3 month old Android phone in a shop around Marine Parade. The guy let me have the phone for $380 ($10 for paying by VISA) only after I said I didn't want any of the accessories. A brand new one would cost $980 at Singtel (without line) mad.

When I bought the phone and turned it on, I realised the previous owner did not reset the phone (probably lost it like I did). So now at least I know what happens to my phone. The phone keeps prompting for a sign in but I can't change the username. Only way to do that is to do a factory reset, which also deletes all your SMS, my mistake for doing that. I thought it will only delete the programs on the phone. So I missed all the SMS from the time I lost the phone on Monday till Thursday evening. No loss I hope, I'm actually in the middle of looking for new opportunities for 2010.

But after I've reset and logged my google account into the phone. It's like magic. This phone is exactly like my previous phone. My calendar is there, my contacts, my newsreader, my emails, my messengers (after I downloaded and setup the accounts). I'm back. I feel powerful and in touch again. Just today I had to look for a printer to get the Compassion Cards printed for tomorrow's Tedx event, I search and call printers while sending off my cousin at the airport and traveling to my office to get some work down. So here I am waiting for the cards while having a nice cool drink at Macs. Oh damn, I wanted to take a picture but I forgot there's no SD card in the phone because I didn't want the accessories. 1 more thing left to do before I'm all powerful again. :)
