I've chosen a particularly scammy sounding title this morning because somehow, that's the thing that people want to read. They want something that's too good to be true. Oh well... This is a guide on getting your own personal site and all the advantages of having the site aka blog. According to wikipedia:

A blog (a contraction of the term "weblog")[1] is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video.

Let me first start with how having a blog can help you get that perfect job. Look at getting the perfect job in 2 dimensions. 1) Being the regular work and employment that 90% of the world is engaged in, which 90% of the time we don't really have a feel for. Not especially waking to that Monday morning 2) What we do to plan additional income so that we can exit the routine of regular work to do what we really love. Having a website gives you...

  1. An extensive testimonial of what and who you are as a person

So how does this benefit you? Think about your last job/scholarship application. Remember the section where you have to fill out references? Why do you have to do that? Basically your prospective employer needs to know how much of what you wrote/said on your resume is true. Similarly, keeping a blog for years is a log of your work done, as an individual. It shows your passion in whatever field you claim to be passionate about. If someone told you he's really interested and knowledgeable in internet marketing, social media etc but does not have a blog or facebook account, how credible is that?

Similarly, if you went for that equity research position with a resume that links to your blog of years and years of equity commentaries, I'm pretty sure it'll add a lot of weight to whatever you have to say. Unless your commentaries have been all crap or your employer just lives in the stone age and doesn't use the internet. Either way, it'll be a wrong fit anyway. This will be better than any testimonial on Linkedin or in writing.

Personally, I've benefitted from having this website. I've gone to job interviews, networking sessions and other formal social occasions where it is almost instantly established my expertise in web tools, community building and CRM/loyalty marketing. On occasions, I am also the internet startup guy. This personal illustration is to show what your website could do for you. How would you like to be known as the investment guru or the property expert? Your personal website is a way to get started especially with people who don't already know you.

  2. Finding your personal niche/specialisation

Having your personal site will help you find your niche. A way of differentiating yourself, in a world of 5 billion websites, you will as you write and create your website find out something unique and special about yourself. Use Google Analytics to find out what people are interested and reading on your blog.  Once you find that out, perservere and continue in depth about that topic and discussion.

Same reason why I'm writing this entry. On my blog, people are interested in 3 things. 1) The project tools that I use. 2) How to go about using the web and social media. 3) Controversial matters on religion. They aren't really controversies created by me, but I do have opinions about these things.

Start writing and discover an area which you can find sustained readership in. Why and how does that help you land that perfect job? Think about it whether it's in a job application, freelance tender or contract job application, the employer/client will want to very much likely hire a guy well known/written in the area of expertise that they are looking for. It's that simple. If I walk into the supermarket and I needed cola, I'll get a coke, just because I've heard of it. Unless of course there's a super discount on another brand or I really hated the taste the last time, but otherwise between a known item and an unknown item, people generally pick the one that is known. You'll get job referrals, business offers, opportunities offered just because they need your expressed area of expertise. It's top of mind recall for everyone and anyone who needs someone from your area of specialisation.

  3. Connect with others who share a common interest

This is a result of finding and expressing your area of passion, interests and expertise. People who are interested and writing about similar matters will find you. You will be able to connect to the rest of the internet in ways exponentially larger than Facebook and Twitter and the likes... The thing about social networks is that you have to be networked to be found. However with the internet and your very own site/blog. You are networked with every and anyone on the internet, provided you did your search optimisation which isn't too difficult.

Your work is now not only limited to the physical location where you live, you can now work with anyone in the connected world. Your perfect job may not always be available in your neighbourhood, it may be out there somewhere in this vast world, now brough together via the internet.

I landed a job in Qatar over the internet, though it had nothing to do with this website but it shows how connected this world is. You want a job? A dream perfect job, then why limit yourself to the town where you live?

  4. Income from doing the usual everyday commentaries and recommendations

Finally I come to the part where every web marketing site you can find will sell. Revenue on the blog. Where's the revenue of this endless writing? This can be an entire entry by itself. Let me just cover the aspect of affiliate and referral revenues. In short, you use or bought a service, you liked it, you recommend it on your website and people who read your review clicked to by the same item. That's what happens on my project tools entries a lot. I use all these cool tools and gadgets on my different projects, and I review them. I put on little affiliate links and referral links and people who love the tool as well buy it. I get a little fee for doing that.

I'm not really rich from doing that. Only about $200 a month now. Not to mention the projects that I get and income from business referrals.

Just like any investment, it's never too late to start and it's always good to start early. The earlier you start, the earlier you'll reap the rewards of the blog. Drop me a message if you can't figure how to get started. I'll show simple things you can do to get started.
