When TuxSeeDo was ready for it's first live version, I decided to host the site locally in hopes of better bandwidth. However things didn't materialise the way I expected. After trying out 2 other notable local hosting companies, Limebox and Readyspace,I realised that they had the same problems that I previously encountered with New Media Express.
Poor startup. It takes more than a day for both companies to have my VPS ready for use. Readyspace didn't send my SSH username and password and only did so after repeatedly asking for it on the helpdesk for days.
Poor support and communications. It generally takes 12-24 hours to get a response from both services and for Limebox, support is only applicable on business days. This is really detrimental especially if you have a live application or service going. The general response time for my US and UK providers are usually less than an hour and 24/7.
Poorly setup environment and hard to use control panels. This is kind of straight forward and there are multiple errors even for a simple Joomla installation. On Readyspace, I couldn't even get multiple ftp users for a single domain.
Finally poor administration systems. My access to my server on Readyspace was cut after I didn't make a manual renewal and recovery took more than 1 day after I've paid. Most US and UK providers have automatic renewal setup and server recoveries are instant.
This is apart from the multiple other errors encountered using their services. Having given the local scene another shot, I think it still reflects the poor position that our hosting and technology scene is in.
Guess I'll have to stick with the US and UK providers.
