SITE SLOGAN

Finding the right tool (Drupal, Joomla, Elgg)

This site is built on Joomla and naturally I'm more versed with the Joomla platform. Looking forward and attempting to build a series of different community sites, I still struggle to find the right platform. I've shortlisted down to Drupal, Joomla and Elgg. Let's go witht the worst one/ rather the one that I'm least familiar with.

 Elgg 1.1

This platform looks good on demo. Built from the core to as a LMS to support social networking. But Elgg 1.1 has a major headache. Hosting requirements. It doesn't install well on other shared hosting. Huge barrier to entry. Huge barrier that I can't make my own try outs. Most likely on it's way out.

Drupal 6.7

Good list of seemingly well structured modules to support content and community building. Even a list of recommended modules found on http://drupal.org/node/206724. Another advantage, out of box multi site. Hmmm... helps me build on the idea of livesconnect. To build a series of drupal sites from one installation. I'm going to do a try out. Only problem is that many of drupal's modules still require work done on them. I'm not much of a programmer but I'm going to try for about a week. All else fails, then it's back to... Joomla.

Joomla 1.5.8

Most familiar with this platform. Easy to deploy out of the box. Combined with my professional template. Quick, clean, but probably not the most scalable deployment. But who's worrying about deployment yet? What I'm still struggling with is the free extensions to support community building. Community builder, not user friendly enough. Jomsocial, costs money and not integrated with many components. Not to mention the only multi-user blogging component it integrates with is Myblog, which has to be paid for and also... the support for media upload is still not up to standard.

Thanks for the note. I'm a user of Godaddy for domain reg myself but due to the fact that I wasn't allowed access to my Mysql database on shared hosting, I dropped the service in favour of my current host.

But since they support Elgg, I might give it a shot.

Your post looks a little spammish in it's format and layout but I'm going to give you some benefit of the doubt and leave it there for a while, since it does address my issue on Elgg testing. I'll feedback if it works.

Thanks for the heads up on Godaddy.

Mind you, I am an Absolute Beginner with Elgg....

But I just wanted to point this out....

I've discovered that GoDaddy.com hosting provides something called 'Quick Install Apps'..... It's a free service.... And ELGG is one of their Quick Install Apps...

This means that, with ONE CLICK, you can install Elgg.

I did just that.

It installs the database, the application, and configures everything you need done... all with one single click.... It's automated.

It installs version 1.0...... But... I was able to upgrade to 1.1 myself easily.

Since their Quick Install installation sets everything up for 1.0, I was able to then upgrade by simply uploading (overwriting) all the file from the 1.1 ZIP file..... then visiting the Upgrade.php page. Couldn't be more simple!!!

( No, I am NOT affiliated with GoDaddy in any way. )

BTW, their 'deluxe' hosting plan gives us an UNLIMITED number of web sites. So, if I have 14 domains.... I can have 14 installations of Elgg.... all for about $6.66 per month..... about $0.48 each...

If you have the 'economy' hosting plan.... for just one web site.... it's about $4.75 per month. If you have 2 or more sites, the 'deluxe' is a better deal.

Also, the 'premium' plan gives you all the same as the 'deluxe', UNLIMITED web sites, ...plus UNLIMITED storage, plus UNLIMITED bandwidth...

I know I sound like I'm plugging them, but since so many people seem to be looking for cheap Elgg hosting.... and SUPER EASY installation of Elgg.... I just wanted to share this discovery with y'all.

PS - They also offer everything Open Source.... from Wordpress to Joomla to you name it... all with easy One Click install.

PPS - I personally think they have the absolute best telephone customer support of any company I've ever dealt with --- not just tech companies... the best of ANY company. (in my personal experience)
